What is a sankalpa?

Definition

A sankalpa is a short, positive intention you repeat in your mind at the beginning and end of Yoga Nidra. It is not a goal or resolution, but a deep wish in the present tense, such as "I am calm".

How to choose a sankalpa

  • Short and simple.
  • Phrased positively, without "not".
  • In the present tense, as if it is already true.
  • Something that truly fits you, not what you think it should be.

Why does it work?

In the deep relaxation of Yoga Nidra the mind is receptive, the traditions say. People who repeat the same sankalpa often notice it echoing through their day.
